A short story of a cashier encountering a trickster in Singapore.

Ah Hua was the stall cashier and assistant cook that day happily tending her food stall and serving food to customers since morning. Just another normal day without knowing what was coming…

Peak period starts at around 11am and customers start streaming in around 1045am. Orders started coming in more and more. The queue starts piling up…. signs of good business… 1 wanton noodle dry, 2 dumpling noodle soup… “Ka Ching” the cash register open and close…

Long queue in RP canteen

By 2pm, the lunch crowd slows down and finally both Hua and the chef had some relief… another smooth peak period and

They were both glad and tired… another half hour more till their break time… this is the sacrifice all folks have to make in the food service line, while others are enjoying lunch, they will work until the end of the peak period before it’s their turn..  In fact many have their 1st meal after the lunch peak and skip breakfast in the morning as the morning prep work takes a long time… breakfast become a dilemma as they might miss a few early customers… so they try to work as fast as possible to prep and open for business…

The Common Trickster Tactic

A plump fair lady comes along… “Hi, what’s your order”? Smiled ah Hua pleasantly with a growling stomach…

“Dry wanton noodle, packet” and pass ah Hua a $10 note… swiftly ah Hua collected the cash and keyed in $5 order and return $5 change…

“Hey wait, I have a $5 note”

“OK” and return the $10 on one hand and collect the $5 with the other… “Ka Ching”. In under a minute, the chef finished prepares the food into the container and passed over.

“Ah girl, where is my $10″, see my wallet… I don’t have much money here and see there isn’t a $10 note….” showing her black wallet with all $2 and $5 notes… indeed no $10…

For a short while, Ah Hua was stunned trying to recollect her thoughts…

“You want to cheat my money, where is my $10…” cried the woman again… ah Hua was taken aback… is that so..? Sure enough there was no $10 in her wallet and she did receive $10 from her… was she too hungry that her brain stopped working?

Ah Hua doubted herself, quickly recollect herself and expressed her apology, she couldn’t believe she make such a newbie mistake… People in the food service line have to always put on a pleasant and polite attitude for better business and avoid offending any customer. Today if I offend this lady due to my blurness’, at most I will have an extra $5 in my register but on the downside I may lose future potential business from her and if worse, she makes an anonymous complaint to SFA and comes uncalled for inspection… that’s not worth $5… So seems like Ah Hua had made up her mind that she was the blur one.

“I am sorry, my mistake” and “Ka Ching” ah Hua return her a $10 note from the cash drawer.

Satisfied, the plumb lady took the money and left with her noodle…

2 min after the customer left, ah Hua took the time to check the CCTV to see her mistake… and shock as she was… she had return the $10 on one hand and took the $5 using the other. She also saw through the CCTV the lady took back the money, put it in another black wallet, stuffed it in her bag.. Subsequently took out another black wallet from the side pouch and said there was no $10 note in her wallet…

She rushes out with her tablet to find the lady… but she was long gone! A $5 lesson.

The Lesson
